In today’s fashion and beauty landscape, sustainability is more than a trend—it’s a necessity. At SomethingMinty, we’re thrilled to offer a gorgeous collection of hair accessories made from an extraordinary material: cellulose acetate.
Â
Derived from natural sources like wood pulp and cotton, cellulose acetate is a game-changer in eco-conscious design. Loved for its durability, versatility, and environmental benefits, this material has become a favorite for creating stylish and sustainable hair accessories that feel as good as they look.
Â
What is Cellulose Acetate?
Cellulose acetate is part of the plastics family but stands out for one key reason: it’s made from natural, renewable materials like wood or cotton rather than petroleum. This plant-based material is derived from the pulp of these plants, making it a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics.
Â
The process of creating cellulose acetate begins with extracting cellulose from wood or cotton fibers through a mechanical stage, where the raw material is worked and refined. This is followed by chemical treatment, often involving caustic soda. Finally, during the “acetylation” stage, acetic anhydride is added to transform the cellulose into cellulose acetate. After a bit of scientific magic, the result is a versatile, eco-friendly material that’s perfect for creating beautiful, sustainable products!
Eco-Friendly Properties of Cellulose Acetate
One of the biggest benefits of cellulose acetate is its eco-friendly qualities. Unlike synthetic materials, it’s biodegradable, so it naturally decomposes without leaving behind harmful waste. Plus, since it’s made from renewable resources like wood and cotton, it’s a sustainable and thoughtful option for crafting hair accessories.
Â
Cellulose Acetate in Hair Accessories
At SomethingMinty, we proudly incorporate cellulose acetate into our hair accessory collection, which features an array of stylish and practical pieces like hair clips, headbands, hair claws, and hair pins. Known for its durability, flexibility, and hypoallergenic qualities, this exceptional material allows us to craft hair accessories that are not only visually stunning but also comfortable to wear and built to last.
Â
How does SomethingMinty manufacture its cellulose acetate hair accessories?
Each of our cellulose acetate accessories goes through several stages of production. Some steps are highly technical and require skilled handcrafting. Discover how we bring them to life!
Â
The process begins with a spark of inspiration and a hand-drawn sketch from Rachel. She then refines the design on her computer, adding final touches to ensure it matches her vision. Once complete, the technical file is sent off to our manufacturer. We’ve partnered with a specialized cellulose acetate factory in East China, near Shanghai, known for its expertise and vast range of colors and effects. This allow us to create our most original designs!
Â
Step 1 - Making the cellulose acetate plate
The process begins with the creation of the cellulose acetate sheet. During this stage, it gains its shape, consistency, and vibrant color. After the sheet is formed, it's carefully polished to achieve a smooth surface, preparing it for the next steps.
Â
Â
Â
Step 2 - Cutting
The next step is to cut the cellulose acetate sheet into the shape of the future accessories. In this step, the machine follows the instructions in the file to laser-cut the cellulose acetate sheets and give shape to the future products.
Â
Â
Â
Step 3 - Shaping the accessoriesÂ
At this stage, the accessory is beginning to take its final form. While it has all the right colors, it’s still flat. For items like hair claws, we need to shape them with a curve to ensure they function properly once the spring is added. The piece is placed in a hot mold and pressed by a machine for a few seconds to achieve the perfect shape.
Â
Â
Step 4 - Gluing the different partsÂ
Many of our cellulose acetate accessories are crafted from multiple colors sourced from different sheets. Take our Corgi Hair Claw, for example—it features a bright orange body paired with a beige bottom. At this stage, these individual parts are carefully joined together.

Â
Step 7: Adding the Logo and Ink Details At this stage, golden, silver, or black ink details are carefully applied by hand using a syringe. The ink is precisely injected into the grooves created during the laser-cutting process (Step 2). This step demands a steady hand, meticulous attention, and skill to trace the lines perfectly without any smudges or mistakes. ÂÂ
Â
Step 8 - CoatingThe accessories are nearly complete! After the final touches, each cellulose acetate piece is thoroughly cleaned once more to ensure no dust or dirt remains from the earlier stages. Lastly, we apply a protective coating, which gives the products their signature shiny and glossy finish.
Â
Â
Â
Step 9 - Quality check and packagingThe final stage of production is a thorough quality check of each product to ensure it meets our high standards. Once approved, the accessories are carefully packaged, ready to be shipped and enjoyed!
