As someone who loves trying different hairstyles, I often see people on forums like Reddit or social media asking: “How do I use hair clips to hold my thick hair?”
I totally get it. I have long, thick hair too, and I used to struggle with the same thing.
But after some digging and testing, I found some clips and styles that actually work really well for thick hair.
So I thought—why not share what I’ve learned with others who are dealing with the same problem?
What kind of hair clips work best for thick hair?
Simple answer: big, strong, and grippy ones.
When I pick a hair clip, I usually look at two things:
Is the clip wide enough?
And is the spring strong enough?
If you have a lot of hair, the clip needs a big enough “belly” to hold it all.
If the spring is strong, your hairstyle will stay in place and won’t fall apart easily.
When we designed our extra large hair clip collection, we really focused on those two things—size and grip. And good news—we’ve heard from lots of happy customers that our clips work great for thick hair.

How to use our hair clips for thick hair?
For people with thick hair, we picked a few easy hairstyles to try. You can follow our step-by-step guide, or just watch our video tutorials.
Try them out and see what works best for you!
1. Twist Full Up
This hairstyle is super simple and looks really classy.
- Use your left hand to gather all your hair into a ponytail.
- Place your right index and middle finger on top of the ponytail, then wrap the hair around your fingers once to make a small loop.
- Twist your fingers upward until all your hair is tucked in.
- Clip it in place with a hair clip.
That’s it! Easy and cute.

2. Secure Full Up
This one’s perfect for long hair—and it holds really well.
- Use your right hand to gather all your hair into a ponytail.
- Slip your left index and middle finger under the ponytail, then twist your fingers to the left until they’re on top.
- With your right hand, wrap the rest of your hair around the twist.
- Clip it in place with a hair clip.
Done! Looks good and stays put.

3. Knot Full Up
This style is great for super thick hair.
- Split your hair into two equal parts—hold one in each hand.
- Tie them together like you’re tying a knot. If your hair is long, you can tie it again.
- Fold the knotted hair downward.
- Clip it in place with a hair clip.
That’s it! Simple, strong, and holds thick hair like a champ.

4. Bun
This hairstyle is great for a casual look.
- Brush your hair smooth.
- Gather it into a ponytail and twist it upwards.
- Clip the base of the twist with a large hair clip. Wrap the rest of the hair around the clip to make a bun.
- Tuck the ends of your hair into the clip.
5. Cross Over
This style is great for long hair too—and it makes your head shape look fuller.
- Brush your hair smooth, then clip the hair clip flat a bit higher on the back of your head.
- Split the rest of your hair into two sections.
- Cross the two sections over each other twice, then cross them again over the clip.
- If your hair is really long, you can cross them one more time.
- Tuck the ends into the clip.
Done! Full, flowy, and super pretty.

Other Hair Accessories for Thick Hair
Besides hair clips, hair sticks are also amazing for holding thick hair. I highly recommend them too!
